Judging criteria

The Single Fin Mingle is a traditional longboard competition, and judging reflects this. While we’ve adopted the updated WSL longboard criteria in recent years, our festival origins place a strong emphasis on entertainment and style.

SFM Judging Criteria for Longboard:

The Surfer must perform controlled maneuvers in the critical section of the wave utilising the entire board and wave using traditional longboard surfing. The Surfer who
performs this to the highest degree of difficulty with the most style, flow and grace will receive the highest score for a Ride. Further to that above, the following are key elements for Judges to consider:
•  Nose riding and rail surfing
•  Critical section of wave
•  Variety
•  Speed and power
•  Commitment
•  Control
•  Footwork

Surfboard Requirements
The surfboard used in the competition must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum 9 ft in length

  • Minimum 8 kg in weight

  • Provision for a single fin only

Surfboards will be weighed and inspected at the beach by board inspector Brownie.

Heat Draw and Schedule will be available via https://www.liveheats.com/events/360077. Please note these times are always subject to change based on conditions so please stay close to the event and alert to changes broadcasted through SFM competitor chat.
